This painting is of a spectacular sunrise in Salcombe, Devon. For anyone that knows Salcombe, they may agree that it looks wonderful at all times, a bustling place filled with happiness. But at Sunrise, whilst most are still sleeping, it is magical. The water is thin glass that responds to the awakening sky. The boats are hovering between shadow and life. Everything is frozen as the sun ascends and fills the day with light.

I think of the process of creating this painting in two halves. The first being capturing the movement and freedom of colour and light dancing across the water and sky. I build this up by putting down layers of washes and moving them around on the canvas until they are blending or bold enough that I was happy.

The second is the boats and scenery sitting on top of the water and below the sky. Using thin brushes and thick layers of paint to get the opaque silhouette of the sleeping objects.

The background pops through the paint and pushes more vibrancy into the colours.

This painting is a joy and a beautiful still of a memory. Whilst being technical it is also expressive and full of movement, something very important to my paintings.
