British Landscape Commission

british landscape watermarked.jpg

For this most recent commission, I was asked to capture an aesthetic landscape that had a balanced and intriguing composition whilst containing major characteristics of the beautiful British countryside. The client gave me complete freedom in the location I would take inspiration from, allowing me to gather imagery from several different uplifting beauty spots to create the subject matter that fulfilled the brief.

This landscape is based in Derbyshire with the body of water referencing Carsington Water, a well known local reservoir. To build this composition I merged two of my collected photographs. In real life the front of the painting involving the sheep is a separate field to the rest of the painting. This method of working provides opportunity to produce intriguing, unique and impactful artwork, meeting the client’s needs.

My brushwork and colour work in this piece is technical and bold. To project the roles of the hills and the movement of the animals and the wind, the colours must be extremely vivid, and the brush marks be deliberate. Hints of oranges, purples and pinks are visible to the viewer. They serve to push the light and shadow to their limits, forcing the painting to burst with life.

The client provided an old canvas that needed to be stripped from its frame. I then stretched a new piece of canvas around the frame resulting in a high-quality base to work upon.

The paintings final resting place is as a centre piece in a newly renovated property, that is used as a holiday rental for up to 22 people.

What were the reasons for looking for a commission?

I started a new business venture – renovating a property which required decoration and artwork to bring the property to life. A large space needed to be filled and it was important to me that the artwork was a high impact piece, first viewed upon entrance into the building. I’m passionate about reusing and reworking old pieces where possible, so was keen to reuse an existing frame.

How did AlexArt help you to take your vision to real life?

Alex has great communication and made the whole process easy and straight forward. We were able to arrange a convenient place to meet in person and I was able to show Alex artwork that I liked, as well as see Alex’s previous work. Alex listened to the brief, took and reacted to feedback well, ensuring she met the brief.

What stood out for you about Alex’s service and / or what were the benefits?

Alex’s attention to detail was flawless and it was clear that she understood my requirements. I was really pleased that she was flexible and able to reuse the existing frame. She went out of her way to source the canvas to fit it and it works so well in the space.
